Topic/event detection and tracking has been in development for the last two decades. Most of the studies have been conducted with Twitter and news feeds, which although diverse, are limited to events like natural disasters, traffic jams, concerts, celebrity gossip, etc. that are relatively easy to spot. Labelling this kind of information as related to an event is not challenging. This creates a research gap, that could be filled by using publicly available datasets with more subtle event types. In this talk, I will describe my work on Stack Overflow forum-like data and tools developed to detect non-trivial events.
