Synthetic biology is a new discipline comprising biology, computer science, chemistry, engineering, genetic engineering and biophysics. Through design and engineering, highly complex bio-systems can be constructed, standardised, created and re-structured by utilising natural biological systems or components in order to understand and provide new solutions for public health, energy and environmental challenges. I am going to briefly introduce the development of synthetic biology and several ongoing synthetic biology projects within the group will also be mentioned.
